| Chris (Beggs) has been involved within
the club scene for years, either as a DJ, part of a road crew or actually
playing in bands himself. His collection of music covers a wide spectrum
of Jazz and Soul, whether it is the driving sound of Fusion and Funk, the
infectious rhythms of Latin Jazz, Salsa and Brazilian or the sweet melodic
sounds of Philadelphia soul. “I got into Jazz many years ago when I became a regular punter at various specialised alldayer events around the country. I would also go to clubs like the Wag club in Soho and Dingwalls in Camden town where all the best DJs played. It was during this time that I got involved in support crew work, working mainly for Sean French, a legendary DJ back then, and still going strong now. ” Later on, Chris became a support DJ for Floorshaker Promotions, run by Martin Lewin and had also begun studying percussion with master drummer and bandleader Robin Jones. “Martin was importing records from America, as well as running specialised jazz nights all over the place. He had a refreshing outlook on what people wanted to hear, and didn’t just import the same stuff that everybody had been playing for years. There were many artists recording great music that remained unnoticed on the British club scene, and very soon other importers were following the trend. Records were exchanging hands for a lot of money, and club goers were beginning to enjoy a wealth of new jazz gems. I firmly believe Martin was at the forefront of this dancefloor revolution!” Chris continued to DJ but concentrated his efforts on his skill as a percussionist .18 months after first picking up the bongos, Chris was playing in his first band. He had first been encouraged to play by a friend of his, Snowboy, who leads his own Latin Salsa band which is now world renowned. “I’m very grateful to Snowboy because his suggestion led to me playing in some great bands, touring the country and generally having a brilliant time. Latin and Salsa is a wonderful form of music, and to able to actually play the instruments is. …Well…a buzz to say the least” On a final note, Chris comments”
I hadn’t got behind the decks for a while so when the Jazz Café
asked me to DJ for them I was delighted. A great club with great people….
and I get to share all this brilliant music again….ENJOY!!” |
