cuttings Reading Evening Post - 8 Feb 2002 (Reading Alive, p9) OUT with James C The Jazz Café, Madejski Stadium, Saturday night The Jazz Café at Madejski Stadium is boldly unique in its approach to entertain, combining a richly atmospheric environment with a great restaurant... ...There's an immediate unspoken invite to check your woes at the door as I was graciously let through to where I would be dining. The stark contrast to other club environments was increasingly evident, as relaxation replaced nervous discord. ..Such opulence, such comfort, surely I couldn't really be in a club? I hadn't as yet had a pint spilled over my lap, and the ever expected aroma of vomit was still wanting! ...the band made a welcome return to the stage and people re-energised from their food took to the dance floor, for sheer fun and to support the band who were becoming increasingly upbeat and provocative. In retrospect, it's an unexpected pleasure to watch live musicians in a club, something I wouldn't have said was needed until experienced. If you're chasing a loud beer-drenched evening this isn't the venue for you, yet if you're after a different and redefined 'night out clubbing' you must head down to the Jazz Café. Respect yourself and dress stylish! Reading Evening Post - 5 Oct 2001 (Reading Alive, p9) Reading is clearly big enough for two serious live Jazz venues, as the stylish new Jazz Café is out to prove. Relocated from Henley, the Madejski Stadium's new nightspot offers a cool, contemporary bar/club, complete with well-utilised dancefloor, chill-out area and intimate brasserie-style eaterie. The decor is brilliant blue, the furniture chrome and wood and the lighting subdued but sparkly. Musicians kick off at about 9.30pm at weekends and the action goes on until 3am courtesy of resident DJ Andy. Funk, acid, soul, blues and fusion are all covered, as well as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday - the mood obviously varies according to who's playing but by 11pm things get livelier and most guests are up on their feet. It's all very laid back, the staff are professional and friendly, there is a waitress service and a choice of seating areas. Some may think the venue isolated but with a shuttle bus from Reading Station, favourable rates at the Madejski Millennium Hotel next door, and now a new limo service there are even more reasons to pay a visit... ...This is a professional, stylish setup ensuring a quality night out. |
